We recognise the need to develop individual talents and team participation on a competitive and social level to afford all learners an opportunity to become involved. A number of major sports include: Athletics, Basketball, Cross-Country, Drum Majorettes, Indoor and Outdoor Hockey, Netball, Softball, Squash, Swimming, Tennis and Volleyball . Minor sports such as Aerobics, Badminton, Cricket, Golf, Gymnastics, Surfing, Synchronised Swimming, Touch Rugby and Walk for Life and Waterpolo are encouraged. Participation is the key word on the sports field.
Sports teams and individual girls have achieved outstanding results, both provincially and nationally. The Drum Majorette squad is one of the best in South Africa.
On the cultural front, the annual drama production is always a highlight of the calendar. For several years a full sale musical has been undertaken. Musical talent is harnessed and developed in the choir, which enriches the ethos of the school. Many activities are initiated and organised by the girls themselves. Clubs and Societies, many of which are organised by pupils are: Chess, Debating, Enviro Club, First Aid, Interact (a branch of Rotary), Photography, Teenagers Against Drug Abuse, Toastmasters, Gavel Club, Choir, Orator and Drama Productions form an integral part of cultural activities. Interhouse competitions further encourage participation while building team spirit and good sportsmanship.

Durban Girls' High School has a long tradition of involvement in the community.
For over fifty years a weekly charity collection has been arranged entirely by the girls, through which social awareness and commitment to the community at large is fostered. In 1993 we adopted a local pre-primary school. Each class adopts a little person at the school.
Most importantly we recognise the importance of developing self worth through a mentor system, many leadership opportunities and the development of life skills which will enable learners to assume their role as responsible and competent members of society in the 21st century.

Established in 1882, Durban Girls' High School builds on a proud tradition, embracing the challenges of new educational ideas and offers a secure, safe and caring environment with respect for personal dignity. It is a modern, innovative and vibrant institution where the individual needs of young women in Grades 8 to 12 are met.
We promote the pursuit of personal excellence, both in academic study and in our comprehensive co-curricular programme of sports, arts and cultural activities. We are proud of the self-motivation, self-confidence and independence nurtured in our learners by our committed, enthusiastic and qualified staff.
