New House Names for 2018

The house names of Athlone, Buxton, Connaught, Milner and Selborne are now a part of history. Having taken the decision to change our house names in order to make them more relevant for learners today, we asked for suggestions from learners, parents, staff and old girls. These suggestions were then passed on to the Representative Council of Learners who narrowed them down to three options. The school then voted for their preferred option and the overwhelming majority chose the names of mineral stones.

An extract from Annelisa Govender’s submission sums up why mineral stones are such a good choice for house names: All these stones are found in their natural forms in parts of Africa. D.G.H.S. girls walk into the school gates as unpolished, irregular shapes – still in our raw form, ready to be polished. They are diverse and varied minerals formed by unique conditions. They embody strength and potential.

The new house names for 2018 will be:

Formerly Athlone, the Red House will be GARNET

Formerly Buxton, the Green House will be MALACHITE

Formerly Connaught, the Blue House will be KYANITE

Formerly Selborne, the Purple House will be AMETHYST

Formerly Milner, the Yellow House will be CITRINE
