DGHS offers a comprehensive Sport Program that encompasses both the competitive and wellness elements of physical activity. Within a broader context of a holistic and balanced education the Sport, PE and wellness activities are intended to foster health, wellness, fitness, self-discipline, team work, cooperation, goal setting, social interaction and self-confidence. In this light the sport and wellness program is an essential component of DGHS’s educational offering for all learners at all levels of ability. The aim of the program is to encourage and assist each learner to participate at the highest level of her potential.  This is based on a sound Physical Education program run by Miss Marais (SA Hockey) and Miss Jacobs (KZN Hockey) who have and are both formally trained in Exercise Science.

The competitive codes offered at DGHS are; Indoor and Outdoor Hockey, Netball, Touch, Waterpolo, Badminton, Gymnastics, Equestrian, Tennis, Swimming, Cross country, Athletics, Chess, Drummies, Action Netball, Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball and Rock Climbing.

2016 saw us introduce two new projects – Surfing and Rowing.

The Wellness program runs all year round and the learners are encouraged to “move” and can choose from Social Sport to wellness/recreational activities. We offer activities such as; Ballroom, Walk for Fitness, Dance, Yoga, Social Tennis, Social Swimming, Social Squash, Aerobics and Taebo.

We also run a CHaOS club (Camping, Hiking and Outdoor Society) which covers outdoor activities, such as hiking, mountain biking, surfing, rowing, sailing and links in with the President’s Award Program.

We also run Learn to Swim programs and First Aid courses for learners.

Every Friday the girls gather for an enjoyable workout and leave with smiles and hard earned sweat. The dancers learn a range of styles like Hip Hop, Contemporary, Jazz and Broadway. The Dance Team has been an exciting project at Durban Girls’ High School and has gone from strength to strength, due to the girls’ dedication and the choreography of Roslyn Toerien. The success that the dancers enjoy can be attributed to their hard work and their commitment to this art.

Our once SA champs are seen often around Glenwood and surrounding areas as they provide entertainment at many of Durban’s Sporting events. It is a year round code, demanding commitment and dedication to practice 3 times a week. Keith Arlo is our resident head coach and is the longest serving coach at DGHS with 27 years’ service.
